शब्दार्थ की दृष्टि से खड़ी बोली हिन्दी का अर्थ हिन्द का होते हुए भी इसका प्रयोग उत्तर भारत के मध्य में बोली जानेवाली भाषा के लिए होता है। खड़ी बोली हिन्दी भारत की सबसे अधिक लोगों द्वारा बोली जाने वाली भाषा है। व्यवहार में यह उस भूभाग की भाषा मानी जाती है. जिसकी सीमा पश्चिम में जैसलमेर, उत्तर-पशिचम में अम्बाला, उत्तर में शिमला से लेकर नेपाल के पूर्वी छोर तक के पहाड़ी प्रदेश, पूर्व में भागलपुर, दक्षिण-पूर्व में रायपुर तथा दक्षिण-पशिचम में खंडवा तक पहुंचती है। इस विशाल भूभाग के निवासियों के साहित्य, पत्र-पत्रिका, शिक्षा-दीक्षा, आपस में वार्तालाप इत्यादि की भाषा खड़ी बोली हिन्दी है, जिसे स्थानीय बोलियों की छाया मिली रहती है। शिष्ट बोलचाल के अतिरिक्त स्कूलों-विद्यालयों में शिक्षा-दीक्षा की भाषा एकमात्र खड़ी बोली है। यह भाषा खड़ी बोली हिन्दी है।
