आम तौर पर घाटी घाटी के आकार की होती है और नदी के कटाव से बनती है। फॉल्ट या दरार की कार्रवाई से एक दरार घाटी को एक डायवर्जेंट प्लेट सीमा पर बनाया जाता है। आगे पपड़ी का प्रसार है और बाद में कटाव दरार को गहरा करता है।
भारत में पूरी तरह से बहने वाली घाटी में नदियाँ हैं: नर्मदा नदी, ताप्ती, माही (सभी पश्चिम में बहने वाली), छोटा नागपुर पठार में दामोदर नदी।
