26 अप्रैल 1986 को यूक्रेन के चेरनोबिल में एक परमाणु संयंत्र में बिजली का वोल्टेज अचानक बहुत अधिक हो गया और यह एक अनियंत्रित श्रृंखला बन गई। इसमें जान-माल का काफी नुकसान हुआ था। करीब पांच लाख लोग विस्थापित हुए। बेलारूस सबसे अधिक प्रभावित था।
