स्वतंत्रता के बाद भारत में, “आपातकाल” 1975-77 में 21 महीने की अवधि को संदर्भित करता है जब प्रधान मंत्री इंदिरा गांधी ने एकतरफा देश भर में आपातकाल की स्थिति घोषित कर दी थी। “आंतरिक अशांति” के लिए संविधान के अनुच्छेद 352 (1) के तहत राष्ट्रपति फखरूदीन अली अहमद द्वारा अधिकारिक तौर पर जारी किया गया, आपातकाल 25 जून 1975 से 21 मार्च 1977 को वापस लेने तक प्रभावी था।
