12 वर्ष तक कठोर तपस्या करने के बाद महावीर स्वामी को 42 वर्ष आयु में जृम्भिकग्राम के समीप ऋजुपालिका नदी के किनारे साल के वृक्ष के नीचे कैवल्य (ज्ञान) प्राप्त हुआ। और इनकी कठोर तपस्या का वर्णन जैन साहित्य कल्पसूत्र और आचारांग सूत्र में मिलता है।
