प्रकाशीय समावयवता

वे कार्बनिक यौगिक जिनके भौतिक व रासायनिक गुण समान होते हैं परन्तु उनका व्यवहार समतल ध्रुवित प्रकाश के प्रति व्यवहार भिन्न - भिन्न होता है , एक दूसरे के प्रकाशीय समावयवी कहलाते हैं और इस घटना को प्रकाशिक समावयवता कहते हैं ।

उदाहरण :-

( लैक्टिक अम्ल की समावयवता ) :

लैक्टिक अम्ल , प्रकाशिक समावयवता का एक उदाहरण है ।
लैक्टिक अम्ल ( CH3CHOHCOOH ) में एक असममित कार्बन परमाणु उपस्थित होता है , जो चार भिन्न मूलकों जैसे :
( -CH3 , -H- , -OH तथा
-COOH ) से जुडा हुआ होता है ; अतः इसकी दो स्थानिक व्यवस्थाएँ सम्भव हैं ।
