व्याख्या :
उत्तर प्रदेश के सारनाथ में अशोक ने जो स्तम्भ बनवाया था उसके शीर्ष भाग को सिंहचतुर्मुख कहते हैं। ध्यान रहे की इस मूर्ति में चार भारतीय सिंह पीठ-से-पीठ सटाये खड़े हैं। अशोक स्तम्भ (ashoka pillar sarnath) अब भी अपने मूल स्थान पर स्थित है किन्तु उसका यह शीर्ष-भाग सारनाथ के संग्रहालय में रखा हुआ है।
यह सिंहचतुर्मुखस्तम्भ शीर्ष ही भारत के राष्ट्रीय चिह्न के रूप में स्वीकार किया गया है। इसके आधार के मध्यभाग में स्थित धर्मचक्र को भारत के राष्ट्रीय ध्वज में बीच की सफेद पट्टी में रखा गया है।
